My Morning Routine | Makeup + Skin Care

Throughout my twenties I've been wearing the same makeup look consistently, and I think I've finally refined the products down to my favourites... For now at least!

Every morning I sit down at my desk with a cup of tea and a freshly cleansed face. I prefer to do my makeup here instead of in the bathroom because I love the natural light, plus I can simultaneously catch up on my favourite YouTube videos on my laptop!

I adore this vintage blue enamel and brass mirror I found in the sale section of Anthropologie. It makes for beautiful decor too when it's not in use. From my previous post you can also see that I've placed my sea print leaning against the wall on my desk. It acts perfectly as a dreamy seaside window!

Before applying my make up, I like to prep my face with a few drops of clary sage essential oil mixed with organic rosehip oil, both of which are from Escents Aromatherapy. Clary sage smells amazing and is an uplifting scent to start the morning with. It calms the nervous system, addresses acne prone  oily skin and stimulates mental activity. The rosehip oil is super hydrating but absorbs quickly. It treats acne and fades wrinkles and/or prevents them because it improves the elasticity of your skin. If I have a blemish, I'll apply a tea tree oil to the area with a cotton bud, and it clears up any redness or inflammation quickly.

My favourite makeup tool currently is the Real Techniques sponge. If you haven't tried using a make up sponge of this kind yet, you need to! Basically, you run the sponge under the tap until it expands and double's in size. Then you squeeze the water out until it left damp. This creates a pillowy soft sponge that will flawlessly apply liquid foundation and concealer like a dream! My favourite foundation for years is still the Bourgouis Healthy Mix Serum and currently I'm pairing it with the Maybelline Fit Me concealer. It does the job and at a good price but I'm still on the hunt for a concealer with primarily natural ingredients.

I used to set my foundation with a Real Techniques powder brush until my makeup artist friend suggested I use the sponge to apply powder as well. I was pretty skeptical, but I was pleasantly surprised with the result. I dip the still damp sponge into my loose Laura Mercier Translucent setting powder and gently press and pat it into my skin. It creates a perfect thin layer without looking cake. I finish everything with a few spritz of Urban Decay's de-slick setting spray, and my face will remain shine free for hours!

For my eyes I use the Physicians Formula Eye Booster felt tip liner in ultra black to create a cat eye and then finish it off with the Physicians Formula Organic Wear mascara. Both of these are relatively free of harmful chemicals compared to most high end and drugstore makeup brands. For the brows, I like to shape them with the Anastasia Brow Wiz in medium brown and then go back in with the Physicians Formula eyeliner but in the shade deep brown to draw in individual brow hairs wherever my brows are sparse. To soften the strokes for a more natural look, I'll comb through them with the Anastasia Brow Wiz's brush end.
